I’ve been following this Dominic Cummings story in detail.
Around the time Cummings was doing all this I was trying to come to terms with my brother’s death from Covid-19, not seeing him, and trying to figure out what to do about a funeral and supporting my parents. /
To be absolutely clear, it took considerable force to stop me jumping in my car and driving the 120 miles to London to see Paul (not that I would have been able to, but rational thought doesn’t factor in these moments). After he died, the same thought applied about a funeral/
I wanted to jump in my car and drive the 300 miles to Scotland to see my parents, even if only across a 2m gap. I would have happily done a 600mile trip in a day to that. Similarly, I wanted to drive to Winchester to see my daughter who moved there a few days before lockdown/
My wife wanted to get in her car and drive 30 mins to see her mum, who lives alone. But we chose not to.
We chose not to because we didn’t want to risk other people. We chose not to because we made do and used technology to communicate.
We chose to follow the rules./
Like millions across the country, we chose to follow the rules and show some responsibility to others to minimise the risk of spreading Covid-19, even though we were relatively sure we were not infected./
So when I read about Cummings trip North, then the justification by the No.10 machine. All this anger seething inside me has erupted again. I see nothing but lies, the hypocrisy and the incompetence of this cabinet of cronies. /
How there is ANY justification for this is beyond my comprehension. Yes they had a young child, so what is the response, jump in a car and drive 260 miles to your parents house where your sister will look after the child? So potentially infecting the sister and parents?/
As others have pointed out this is one rule for us and another for them. Doubly so as they made the journey knowing they were infected. In my view that is criminal intent to infect. There is no excuse.
Then to follow it up with a puff piece in The Spectator? /
So Cummings has to go. No excuses. Johnson has to step up and show leadership and sack him. If he doesn’t it tells us more about his reliance on Cummings than anything else.
The nation has bigger issues to deal with than one man’s arrogance but it needs an example setting/
It cannot be one rule for us and one for them. Millions across the UK are suffering through this. We are all trying to do our best to get through this. If we cannot look to our leaders to set an example then who can we? We have had enough of sycophants and bullies. For once, lead
