Question for planners. Whats the most confusing planning concept to explain to ppl? One for me is that, often, infill development really only makes up for population that’s been lost due to declining household sizes, i.e. new housing is needed just to maintain current pop. level
Another one. The key to saving local retail is not how you zone your commercial areas, but how you zone your residential areas. Local business growth needs local population growth.
This one comes up a lot. Planning can’t force someone to redevelop their property. It can only allow them to do so.
When it comes to parks, sometimes bigger is not better. Massive parks can be dead zones. Good design, human-scale and proximity to residential areas often matters more.
“People Zoning” is not allowed. You can zone for housing types, but you can’t dictate who moves in. Renters. Owners. Families. Singles. Multi-generational. Seniors. Students. It’s all the same.
