$SHOP $SQ $TWTR going fully remote, and $FB $GOOG iterating towards a more remote workforce is going to change the landscape significantly. In the long term, this movement is going to increase the profitability of these companies even further.

A short thread.
I don't believe in just office work. That ship has sailed. Full remote can work for companies that can shift their culture. A mix of the two is likely best for most companies.

Advantages:

- Not having to commute every day
- Access to more talent
- Can hire more broadly
- Software Engineering is remote-friendly work
- Any structured work is
Disadvantages:
- Optimizing company processes is easier if you pick one side
- Design and Creative work are harder. It is not done sitting behind a screen all-day
- Many people will miss the in-person social interaction and events
- Parents will struggle with full WFH if kids are around
- Do people who live in a small apartment really want to work from home all the time. I definitely don't think so -> co-working space around the corner will be needed for deep, uninterrupted work
- Would I move to the countryside if I worked for a full remote company? Probably not as a career starter. The risk of having to move to another job is high. Unless there's an abundance of full-time remote jobs available, moving out of the popular cities could be a risk.
-Additionally, are people really going to leave behind family, friends, pull kids away from their friends and school just to work remotely in a cheaper city? I don't think that cities will see a mass exodus. Talent will always congregate in a few places anyway.
- I would imagine that $SQ $TWTR $SHOP are going to phase out people who don't perform in full remote. This will lead to less office space -> more profitability
- Leading people remotely is not an issue. Good leaders will have figured out how to do that in the last 3-4 months
Overall, this is very exciting and I love the movement to full or more remote work. Ultimately it is going to be a tailwind for the companies that embrace this model, which should lead to more profitability in the long term.
