1. A fair few women have piped up to say criticism of Laura Kuenssberg in relation to the story about Dominic Cummings breaking lockdown rules is misogynistic and sexist. This is as appalling a ‘hot take’ as LK’s response to this story.
2. It’s clear that some senior journalists knew about Dominic Cummings breaking lockdown rules in April. They sat on the story. It’s outrageous.
It shows again how power, overwhelmingly male, elite & white, with a sprinkling of women from same demographic, always protect power.
3. Journalism continues to be one of the most elite and unrepresentative professions in the country and it shows daily with the out of touch way so many stories and issues are covered.
4. It’s Eid this weekend. The overwhelming and patronising tone of so much of the media coverage is to constantly talk at the traumatised British Muslim community (dying in high numbers due to Covid-19), telling us to stay at home and not see each other during Eid celebrations.
5. There is no evidence of mass gatherings bytw. Everyone I know is trying to protect our elders, family and friends from this horrific disease and yet the far- right and right wing media will use any ‘evidence’ of Muslims ‘gathering’ for Eid to stoke up more Islamophobia, racism
6. and hate against our families, friends and communities. A report out last week showed disproportionate poc have been cautioned or fined by the police for “lockdown breaches”...
And this is why the Dominic Cummings story matters beyond the Westminister echo chamber and bubble.
7. It goes to the heart of privilege, power and abuse of power and how it’s becoming harder and harder to hold those in power to account.
