Today Spain's radical right is protesting against the government. All very legit, except for the fact that they chant "Freedom, freedom!" while displaying Franco's flag - the very same flag that symbolises unfreedom. It's not just populism anymore: it's pure political dystopia. https://twitter.com/AntonioMaestre/status/1264150300429959168
And yes, you're not crazy: the way that Spain's radical right has chosen to protest against the government has been by taking to the streets with their expensive cars, making a whole lot of noise while gently polluting Madrid at the same time. Environmental & noise pollution, 2x1
Yes, there are people in the protests who are just fed up with the government's disastrous Covid-19 management. But the fact is that today's marches have been organized by Vox, Spain's far-right party. Vox MPs are leading the way, and the rest are following. That's the reality.
And yes, not all the cars in the protests are "expensive": there are also some humble workers taking part. But it's very clear who is the mobilizing leadership, the brains behind this initiative: radical right and far right circles who want to see Spain ruled by Franco's heirs.
