Intrigued to look at how the Press responded to the # #Cummings story last night and this morning.
Obviously the Guardian and Mirror were splashing on it from the word go, so this is more about how others played catch-up
(1/?)
Hats off to @thetelegraph which changed up to splash on a story damaging to the government it supports and the PM it has championed forever.
News value triumphs - especially over a worthy but lacklustre Huawei story.
(2/?)
@dailymailuk did a quick slip to make room for Cummings pic on front and a page lead inside. Then changing up for a spread inside, but without expanding P1 presence.
Why? Possibly because holidays a good bank holiday weekend story and puffs always vital on Saturday
(3/?)
@dailyexpressuk also changed front to make Cummings second puff and made it RH element on inside spread, sticking with holidays for splash and main spread heading.
(4/?)
Neither @theipaper nor @FT managed to get the story in any edition.
And neither @NewsUK title could find room for it on their fronts, though both put the story inside on later editions.
@thesun, like the Mail and Express, stuck with holidays, self-promo and Joe Wicks pinup
(5/?)
@thetimes, unusually for a Saturday, had a splash of more interest to employers than workers. It declined to reduce the 44% of the page devoted to puffs or junk @jk_rowling. It did, however make the second blob in the "other developments" section of the splash and a spread inside
And on reflection today?
All papers' websites are leading on Cummings - with the exception of http://thesun.co.uk , which is majoring on this morning's Times splash.
...and the FT, which is sticking with its print splash on Rishi Sunak wanting an end to #lockdown
The rest all angle their coverage on Downing St defending Cummings - although the Express's home page is dominated by a "should he resign?" poll.
Which is sort of understandable, as it's the later development.....
Except, except, except....
in the time it has taken to write this thread, @mailonline has changed its home page, so that the headline is no longer "he didn't break lockdown", but "police investigating".
Sometimes Mr Cummings doesn't control everything.
Have a nice day.
