A few weeks ago I did a well publicised thread on the amazing work by many over the last few months on how what they did has saved lives, protected the vulnerable

see also the #adayinthelifeofadph stuff

LGA series of interviews with DPH types on the local response to COVID

2/
Whilst that stuff is interviews with DPH types one of the things we have all emphasised is that it is a team effort, and there is an assumption DPH does all this stuff by his / her self

Folk might have the impression its ME that does all this stuff
patently untrue

3/
EVERY DPH is supported by a small dedicated team of highly skilled public health professionals

their role of often not visible, and mostly unsung

4/
I have an amazing PH team are working flat out to serve the population of Sheffield in response to the Covid19 epidemic and have been for the last 12 weeks (and well before that).

5/

10/
so…. Lots of examples of stuff our staff doing amazing things in lots of different spaces

There’s a lot of local work, also a lot of regional and national work they do

11/
WHAT SKILLS do they use and deploy?
Some of this stuff and the support PH types provide requires high level of skill and expertise (consultant sort of role)

12/
WHAT SKILLS cont
There is a heavy element of “system leadership” (whatever that is) – leading, shaping, influencing, stitching it together, connecting different silos within and across organisations
These are the skills ANY organisation should treasure.

13/
WHAT SKILLS

Then there is a whole bunch of technical expertise on evidence based policy (and all the nuances in “evidence”), evaluation, epidemiology, ethics & economics
And a whole bunch more
This is quite hard to capture, visibly measure and value
but no less important
14/
the setting DOES matter

A lot of this has ONLY happened on account of our location in local gov, and without that location our contribution would be considerably more narrow than it actually has been.

15/
And it is well beyond MY team, PH professionals in PHE are also doing an amazing job supporting local authorities.

Again often unseen in the public domain but doesn’t make it any less important.

16/
We should acknowledge the contributions of all of those people.

I wont name individuals here – they know who they are (and I also run the danger of forgetting someone if I start :))

17/
It needs to be more than me saying “you did a great job”

(which they undoubtedly did in my case – an astoundingly talented bunch of folk…)

18/
As somebody said to me ….. “I never knew you had all these people in your team”

Often it might be taken for granted ….. especially if the visible figurehead is the DPH (folk not in the loop might think she or he does it all – obviously wrong)
