I had done some research into this for a podcast that never happened. In 1971, India had 93,000 Pakistani POWs from the war. They were kept like POWs are by international conventions by nations. Basic decency. Then released after the Simla agreement that ended the war.

That was probably the first time biryani was used by sanghis as a gaslighting dog whistle. They spread a rumor that Pakistani POWs would make "farmaish" everyday of biryani and kebabs. And Indian govt "pampered" them by catering to their whims. Lies, of course.

Over the years, I heard this trope frequently from uncles and friends. In Pune, Bombay, Indore. Jinda-Sukha were fed tandoori chicken . Yakub Memon was fed biryani . On and on. You'd think the Indian govt is addicted to feeding people fancy foods in jail.
Lies obviously.

The entire basis of the Sangh Parivar's existence is to keep pretending that Indian Muslims are the pampered, privileged, nasty, horny, gluttonous, etc etc. Unless you've spent some time in the sanghi ecosystem, you have no idea how relentless the muslimphobic messages are.

There's also Christianphobia, and the occasional derision as well as co-opting of neo-Buddhists and Sikhs. But those are side shows. The main focus is always whipping up hate for muslims. They didn't even let covid go without using it for that purpose.

P.S. Forgot to mention that this thread was spurred by the fact that today is Eid. The one day sanghis put their bigotry on hold a little bit and try to finagle biryani from Muslims they know.
