I was working on the door of @theliquorrooms with Lexy, unable to go to Dublin Castle. We were proudly wearing our YES badges. A soft roar rippled over the city, and the air suddenly became electric and warm. The joy washed over the streets, and it was magical. #MarRefMemories
But there was a lot of difficult times too: My company refused to take part in Businesses for Yes because of 'The Corporates' even though I pointed out all those corporates had Pride floats; I tried to convince the bar staff where I worked to vote but most were indifferent.
I was horrifically depressed and didn't have the emotional capacity to canvas properly, and as a foreign national I was not allowed to vote, so I felt really shitty and helpless and kind of distant from a future that directly affected me.
Thankfully in that moment, with us on the door together, all that sadness & frustration fell away. But I also felt I hadn't done enough, and I guess that's why I went headlong into the abortion referendum. I was determined to compensate, but it's hard, not being allowed to vote.
So I guess I just wanted to show the whole story in this thread. It was a glorious day, but it wasn't easy, personally getting there. But that joy, and relief, and sense of acceptance and community, will echo throughout history forever.
