The Dominic Cummings story is important for a number of reasons. The public have been asked to severely restrict their activities - including not attend the funerals of loved ones or visit family - and Cummings chose to travel 250 miles to his parents when he was infected.
How can a government force people to to do something that they themself aren’t following? Many of the public will not take kindly to one rule for them and one for the rest of us
Cummings is an unelected and unaccountable advisor who seems to have great influence over government. The public or media cannot question him.
Cummings was found in contempt of Parliament because he refused to attend a parliamentary inquiry into fake news. Why isn’t he accountable to the public, journalists or parliament? https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmprivi/1490/149003.htm
Cummings himself described his visit to his parents as ‘fake news’. https://twitter.com/queenchristina_/status/1263962266132676608
The trend of political journalists using ‘sources’ was exposed by Laura Kuenssberg wading in to counter another journalist’s story (presumably where due diligence had been undertaken). The political journalist should be questioning No 10, not anonymously doing their job for them.
The intricate relationships between journalists and government was also exposed by the story written by Sepctator editor Mary Wakefield, Cummings’ wife, who appears to be giving them an alibi
We also shouldn’t forget that Boris Johnson is a former journalist with the Spectator and Telegraph, Gove is a former Times journalist and is married to Sarah Vain at the Mail. These relationships matter for democracy and accountability.
And there are similarities with a previous member of SAGE - this time being visited and post-covid19 - and sections of the government supporting media revelling i his resignation
