So, yesterday was the Pac-Man anniversary. I didn't want to be critical or negative during the anniversary; I wanted to try to have fun and not ruin others' fun.
Now that the actual anniversary has passed, this thread will give my thoughts and criticisms.
Please don't hate me.
What has been announced within the past couple days really just perpetuates my problem with the current state of the franchise; it's all just small stuff. The small stuff itself isn't bad, but there's just no big stuff to get excited about.
An album, an art book, a statue... these things are cool and all, but they're not big things.
What is Pac-Man most well known for? Video games. Pac-Man is a video game franchise.
So obviously, the thing they should do is release a new video game. Did we get that? Well...
The only new video games we got were Pac-Man Live Studio and Pac-Man DLC for Minecraft.
One of those is a DLC pack for a different game.
The other is a Twitch/web browser maze creator.
That's it. That's all we got. No new console game. No game exciting enough to get hyped for.
The IDEA of making and sharing your own Pac-Man mazes is brilliant. The thing is, it's already been done like 4 other times and none of them feel like "the Super Mario Maker of Pac-Man" most of us had been hoping for, and Live Studio doesn't really seem any different.
The Minecraft DLC is something I was more happy about, and I actually bought and played it.
The map and mechanics were quite fun, there was some fan service by including obscure characters, I loved how there was more than just the classic maze to explore, I could go on and on...
I loved the Minecraft Pac-Man DLC... by it's still a smaller thing. I don't want to give the wrong message with this thread; the small stuff is good and they can keep doing it, but they GOTTA do some big stuff too. A lot of us fans aren't gonna be satisfied with only small stuff.
A LOT of fans want Pac-Man World to come back, either as a remake or a sequel.
But really, we just need a new console Pac-Man adventure game. It doesn't need to have World in the name. Heck, it doesn't even need to be a platformer. We just want a new console game like World.
I KNOW that they are aware of what fans want. I know that both the official Pac-Man Twitter and a couple of personal accounts of people who work at Bandai Namco have seen the fan demand. On any of the Pac-Man account's tweets, there's always at least one person asking for World.
Honestly, things like the Minecraft DLC and a couple of mobile games all having fan service to the World games gives me the impression that perhaps want to do something like that but are assigned for something smaller? This is just pure spectulation, but still...
There's a lot of uncertainty on whether what was announced is everything they have, or if they'll have more to announce later in the year. I seriously hope they have more in store because if not, this is probably be the worst anniversary the series has ever seen, sorry to say.
The reason why I'm so critical is because I care about this series. I want to see it improve and put out great big games again. I have nothing against anyone working on these projects, or the projects themselves. I just long for something more. Something I can get excited for.
If anyone working at Bandai Namco sees this, I just hope you can understand where I and many other fans are coming from.
