Of course what Cummings did was dangerous. If he stopped to rest, for fuel or to use the bathroom, which is likely given the journey length, he endangered others. If he or his wife drove while so unwell they couldn’t look after a child, he was in danger of causing an accident 1/
But this is enraging on a deeper level. Even if Cummings miraculously infected nobody this time, if everyone did what Cummings did, by which I mean drove 250 miles to stay with elderly people while infected with the virus, the danger would be astronomical. 3/
Others have had to struggle through terrible symptoms to care for children. Many, many people have not seen their loved ones in months, have missed funerals, haven’t been able to care for or comfort sick relatives, couldn’t hold a dying loved one’s hand 4/
I’m not one of those people who feels like ‘if he broke lockdown why shouldn’t I?’ My brain doesn’t work that way. The danger is still present and real even if a very selfish person chose to ignore it & I wouldn’t have done anything differently if I’d have known 5/
But - lots of people will not be feeling this way. As others have pointed out, it’s a hot bank holiday weekend. People are so desperate for this to be over. There will be those out there who think ‘if they’re doing it, it must be safe, so why am I bothering with lockdown?’ 6/
We all know Cummings has no shame. He won’t go on his own. But he should be pushed. I hope this will not be just another thing the die-hard faithful fans make excuses for. If he stays, the government has zero credibility going forward 7/
