Something I've been thinking about way too much lately: things I wish someone told me when I broke in -
1) Do not try to make sense of the industry. You can't. No one can. It will do serious mental damage to you if you try. And just when you think you've figured it out, a purple Mack truck with a unicorn horn and fangs will hit you out of nowhere. Sometimes this is a good thing.
Mostly it isn't.
2) Find the people you can trust. They are few and far between. And not necessarily who you expect. You will recognize them by their actions not their words. Words are cheap.
3) Your absolute best meetings and calls will be with other creatives. You speak the same language.
4) Your absolute worst will be about money. Ie: Asking where the payment is that was due 8 months ago.
5) The amount of energy you spend on the business side of things is as great, if not greater than the energy spent writing. It take a toll. Take care of your mental health.
6) You need to be your own biggest champion. Not only do you have to believe in your work 100%, but you have to fight hard and loudly and often. Buy a large sword.
7) People compare the industry to a roller-coaster. That isn't quite accurate. It's more like a coaster if it were pitch black and you couldn't see the drops and sharp curves coming. Oh, and someone thrusts a chicken into your arms just as you start moving, and tells you...
...that you gotta keep it alive. Oh, and by the way, this particular breed of chicken occasionally spontaneously bursts into flames. Sounds totally absurd. But it's pretty damn accurate. So ends my late night rant.
