Today's a biggie in the #ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches saga as it is, ta da! @GlosCathedral just right for #favouritechurches I'll be adding this thread over the day, starting Christopher Whall's #stainedglass in the Lady Chapel, starting with his first, the Fall, 1898.
Onward with more #ArtsandCrafts #ChristopherWhall #stainedglass @GlosCathedral's Lady Chapel - he designed and made glass for most of the chapel, save the East window and, sadly, the south sanctuary window. Here is a selection from my photos...
The bits of #ChristopherWhall's #stainedglass in @GlosCathedral's Lady Chapel I like best are the little scenes below the images of saints - top: Frideswide, monk carving at Lincoln; bottom: Samson uncovering St Edmund, St Oswald dying in battle
But @GlosCathedral is full of #ArtsandCrafts treasures. Next up is the Tinling memorial by #HenryWilson, 1898, made of bronze, lapis and marble, showing a child angel leading the Canon to the door to heaven. Think @NellytheWillow will like this...
Back to Christopher Whall and then a coffee break! In 1902 he was commissioned to produce the Boer War #warmemorial in the Chapter House of @GlosCathedral. Usually closed, but @todbooklady and I managed a flit in there in Jan: these are her better than mine photos, thank you Liz!
Theglass isn't the only part of the Boer #warmemorial - the roll of honour was designed by C R Ashbee and made at the Guild of Handicraft. Ashbee used Whall's Lady Chapel script for the lettering #ArtsandCrafts #lettering Detail: Gordon T Lawson, whole: Roger Smith
The Tinling family is represented again in a #stainedglass window designed by J D Sedding, 1878. This time to Catherine Maria Tinling, the Canon's wife, and Sedding's mother-in-law. Glass made Kempe, inspired by #PreRaphaelite sensibility. @BSMGP @NellytheWillow
J D Sedding contributed another couple of things to @GlosCathedral. One, a #memorial to Dean Henry Law, I have no image, but he also designed a silver gilt flagon in memory of Canon Richard Harvey and his wife Elizabeth with lovely #pelicaninherpiety (last tag @NellytheWillow)
Lunchtime now but still another 12 things to come so watch this space...
Okay, back again with more Henry Wilson @GlosCathedral cath! Another #memorial, this time to Canon Evan Evans, also Master of @PembrokeOxford. The memorial was made by F W Pomeroy, 1895. Sorry, @NellytheWillow, I'd forgotten about this one, this really is the last tag!
Right, something different! More #stainedglass @BSMGP, but much later, installed 1924, by Morris & Co. and designed J H Dearle, in the cloister.
Back into the Treasury now, and back to the Guild of Handicraft, with this simple silver chalice by Fred Partridge, 1903 and presented to Broad Campden church by Janet Ashbee on the birth of Mary Elizabeth, her youngest daughter, in 1911 #ArtsandCrafts #decorativeart
Well, I think it's time for the magisterial clock also by Henry Wilson, well represented in @GlosCathedral, as a memorial to another @PembrokeOxford Master, Canon Bartholomew Price - a fellow of the @RoyalAstroSoc. It shows #ZodiacSigns. These also by - thank you - @todbooklady
And on we go with our #ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches @GlosCathedral. Last Henry Wilson piece now, the Tinling chalice dedicated to the same Canon Tinling as the memorial. The knop represents the Temple of the Lamb. Silver, silver-gilt and enamel ... @NellytheWillow sorry...
Next up we have a memorial to an important #Gloucestershire & #Cheltenham figure, Dorothea Beale, Principal of @cheltladiescoll and founder of @hilda_beastoxf. Her bronze memorial, 1910, by Alfred Drury, has lettering by Eric Gill. Image: Andrew R Abbot
Six more things to go including this one! Our friends the #BromsgroveGuild are next, providing the bronze plaque for Bishop Ellicott, alongside his stonking marble #memorial by W J Frith, 1911. Full image: Basher Eyre
Into the #WWI years we go - and to one of my boys, #ErnestGimson, who designed this memorial for Admiral Henry Christian, Constable of #Gloucestershire. The design is, of course, @TheWilsonChelt, and shows Gimson's predilection for oak leaves.
On a roll now, and back to #stainedglass with Veronica Whall - this window, high up in @GlosCathedral's Lady Chapel, shows St Christopher, and is a memorial to her father, who died in 1924. The face of Christopher is said to be a portrait of her father. @BSMGP Detail: Rex Harris
Into the tiny South Chapel and there is more #ChristopherWhall, a #memorial to @GlosCathedral organist Charles Harford Lloyd, 1921 #stainedglass @BSMGP
And more Veronica Whall with these charming angels of 1929 to another organist, Sir Alfred Herbert Brewer #stainedglass @BSMGP
Nearly there! Another memorial by one of my boys, this time by #EmeryWalker, and commemorating #composer Hubert Parry. You can see the influence of Gimson in this memorial, but also Walker's love of #heraldry and, of course, #typography @EmeryWalker_org @WmMorrisSocUK
