Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of my favorite sporting moment ever: @Inter beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League final to give them the treble, only the sixth treble to occur in European history. For so many reasons I'll never forget that run. 1/?
I was abroad in Ghana for the knockout stages, and the entire country was glued to the CL matches. And with Inter home to Muntari, a Ghanaian, Ballotelli, a Ghanaian at birth, and Eto'o, one of the best African players ever, there was a lot of Inter support. 2/?
It was the only time I can remember watching inter games in rooms full of other supporters, and it was glorious. I was traveling and in a town called Takoradi for a match against Chelsea, and when Eto'o scored the entire town erupted like nothing I'd ever heard 3/?
When they beat Barcelona 3-1 I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Barcelona was supposed to be untouchable, but Mourinho's tactics were too much. Everyone was on point, from Julia Cesar up through Milito/Eto'o. Seeing Inter then hold on in the second leg was something else 4/?
For the final I was back home, watching the game with my family as we had every CL final since 99. Watching the game with my brother was truly special, as he got me into Inter. When we were younger my brother Joe and I were very competitive. 5/?
Nothing made me happier than beating my bro/seeing him lose. Like a lot of young Americans, my first team was Man U as that's who I was exposed to first. Joe was drawn to Inter because they had Turibo West, a Nigerian player my he loved bc he loved Nigeria 6/?
So, naturally, I hated Inter. I actively rooted against them for a few years just to spite Joe. And when he went to college I watched them alone on weekends so I could trash talk him when we spoke. Soon, I was completely sucked in. Hate watching turned to love. 7/?
The same thing happened with UNC b-ball. I was initially a Temple fan, but spite for UNC turned to love because of Joe. Anyway, watching Inter take down Bayern and win it all brought a level of joy I didn't think was possible wrt sports viewing. 8/?
I was on a high for ages. Yes it felt good to rub it in the faces of my Chelsea fan roommate and English friends that constantly grilled me for liking Inter. But I think what made it really special was seeing just how happy Joe was. 9/?
Sharing that moment with him is something I'll never forget and I'll cherish that memory forever. The look on his face when Zanetti hoisted the trophy is ingrained in my head, and the only other time I remember him that happy was his wedding day. 10/?
And that run from Inter is something I'll never forget. Watching Sneijder orchestrate the attack week in week out was something to behold. Here was a castoff from Madrid, bought for like 14 mill, dominating Europe with his vision and passing 11/?
Had I still been playing he's who I would have tried to emulate. And I'll always maintain that him not winning the balon d'or that year was an injustice. Treble winner, WC runner up with the Dutch, leading scorer at the WC...and Inter's entire attack flowing through him 13/?
(that last one is actually tweet 12, my b) That year Julio Cesar was the best keeper in Europe, Lucio the best CB, Maicon the best RWB. Sneijder the best midfielder (though Iniesta certainly has a case), and Eto'o and Milito making one of the most clinical tandems around. 13/?
They could rack up goals with a potent attack, or park the bus and wait for a single opportunity to pounce. It was the classic Mourinho squad, moreso than any other team he's managed, imo. Obviously I'm in the minority here bc of his time with Chelsea, but I think 14/?
The spending power of Avromovich derailed that. At Inter we saw Mourinho at his height, and it was something else. Since I mentioned the WC earlier I feel obligated to say fuck Maradona. That year he left Cambiasso and Zanetti off the squad, and Milito sat all tourney 15/?
How Maradona could leave two players like Zanetti and Cambiasso behind after the seasons they had just stuns me. Two guys who arguably should have been captains not even getting the nod is shameful, and Argentina paid for it. 16/?
Anyway, that's about it. I miss that squad so much. Inter's returning to form under Conte, and I feel like another CL title is on the horizon, and I'm sure when it comes I'll take it in with my bro. But nothing will ever come close to 2010. Fin.
