hinata calls kageyama for the first time since they graduated high school.

he picked up on the first ring.

“i’ve known you for six years and i loved you for three.” hinata says as a greeting, his voice barely a whisper.

kageyama remained silent over the phone, he couldn't bring himself to say anything.

“i’m sorry it took me so long to say it but i love you kageyama.”

kageyama let out a long breath over the phone, “and i’m sorry it took me so long to say i can’t love you back.”

hinata knew that this was going to happen but still felt the words pierce every cell in him, his weak heart barely beating.

“we can’t even have a proper closure since i can’t see you now.” hinata softly laughs, trying to shake off the pain in his chest.

they were in different prefectures after all and hinata was stuck in white four walls, the beeping was driving him insane.

but right now, all he can hear is the soft breaths coming from kageyama, he can’t imagine the look on his face right now. was he relieved or upset?

kageyama did not say a word but he could hear someone sliding the door open on hinata’s end.

“shoyo, who are you talking to?” the strong accent could be heard and hinata swears he felt kageyama stiffen up over the phone.

hinata quickly looks over, and whispers in the phone: “i have to go, maybe I'll see you on the court again kageyama.”

he hung up and hid the phone under his pillow, he wasn’t allowed to do this.

“shoyo, you know you aren’t allowed to make phone calls that makes you hyperventilate,” atsumu comes over to sit on his bed, stroking hinata’s face slowly, “look at the heartbeat monitor going off the charts.”

he couldn’t risk losing Hinata right now.

hinata tries his best to put up a smile, his voice slightly shaking, “just making one last phone call.”
