1. rocky (1976) - bill conti
starting off strong with a KICKASS soundtrack. conti takes the theme from the inspirational rock song opening and turns it into everything from a sad piano ballad to a four-voice fugue. it's a wild ride.

2. the mission (1986) - ennio morricone
the opening oboe solo is everything. this is gentle, and powerful, and before i know it i have tears streaming down my face. in my opinion, this is what hope sounds like.

3. la strada (1854) - nina rota
perhaps the most gorgeous trumpet solo of all time. the melody is so charming yet so sad? this piece of music speaks of longing and heartache and it's so gorgeous. and when it gets mischievious.... oh boy. it's so good.

4. moon river, from breakfast in tiffany's (1961) - henry mancini
this always brings a smile to my face. there's something so nostalgic about his music; moon river is maybe one of his simplest tracks, but that, i think, is what makes it so beautiful.

5. whiplash (2014) - hank levy, arr. justin hurwitz
is it fair to include a jazz standard in this thread? but look, it's the title track, and the rest of the soundtrack is also incredible. whiplash is absolute fire, and so, so, so damn hard to play.
