Something odd and unfortunate is happening to a lot of the women I know and we’ve started to discuss it a lot lately. A large number of women I know very well and even casually have expressed sadness about their bodies since quarantine began. I think it’s worthy of discussion.
Women already face an impossible task of dealing with what is expected of our looks and our bodies but it’s almost like this lockdown has provided a false sense of extra time, which we are of course supposed to use for getting more fit.
Right? That’s the sentiment. We are out of routine, no longer have access to gyms or normal daily activities and as a result as less active. Oh also there’s a pandemic and we are all stressed and sad and eating our feelings which is totally normal.
But in my entire life I’ve never had these talks with this many people. We are gaining weight we are examining every millimeter added and we feel the pressure of using our so called “extra time” to get our bodies into pristine condition, this is absolute bullshit.
I know if this many of my friend and myself included feel this way, there must be a lot of others. And I think (I’m sorry to do this) but I need to quote Taylor Swift on this one. In her doc she talks a lot about her unhealthy body image and the pressure public life brings.
But she eventually says essentially that she was so unhappy trying to be a certain size and when she let go of that she felt happy, she was slightly less skinny but happier. I think there’s something to be said for that.
Women if you feel this way know you are not alone. So what if you gained weight during a worldwide crisis? Your weight and fitness do not reflect your beauty or worth. Men made those rules which makes them null and void.
Sorry for the typos but I just talked to my twelfth friend this week about this and it’s making me so sad and upset. I wish we didn’t analyze every inch of ourselves like this. I wish we could just be ok in our skin just for a little while.
Anyway, ladies, you are perfect just as you are and to back me up here is Freddie
