The problem with the idea of doing a test of a nuclear device is where to do it.
Las Vegas has grown in the direction of the test site. Even back in the day, it was awfully close.

There just aren& #39;t big enough spaces.
And would the test be underground? That requires a lot of drilling and instrumentation that would pretty much have to be invented from scratch.

Not to mention that nobody working for the national labs has ever done a test. There are a few oldies around, but testing is a lot of work. The newbies would have to learn a lot, fast.
