#sangcheng modern au something

“You can’t say those things and mean them and just leave,” Jiang Cheng says.

“Who says I meant them?” Nie Huaisang replies; Jiang Cheng’s fingers curl into the collar of his shirt, the way they had curled into his hair, once.
“You did,” Jiang Cheng says furiously. “I know you did.”

In this case, knowing does nothing but hurt. Knowing does nothing when Nie Huaisang just laughs. Knowing it sounds like he just might cry—that keeps Jiang Cheng there, frozen and connected even through contention, concern.
“Maybe I did,” Nie Huaisang says, when whatever it is passes. “Past tense, Jiang Cheng.”

Jiang Cheng deflates. “Fine. /Fine/.”

“We’re better off alone,” Nie Huaisang murmurs.

“We were alone together,” Jiang Cheng says, “if that’s what you’re so scared about.”
Two people and two walls around two hearts.

“It was nice to run into you,” Nie Huaisang says suddenly, forcing a smile. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”

Jiang Cheng’s brow burrows. “What the fuck?”

“I need to go,” Nie Huaisang says.

Jiang Cheng let him go once. Today: again.
But this time — this time he has a feeling it isn’t the end.
