Me: Why do you fight?

Naomi Klein: it's a cauldron of forces that keep me going, of emotions. Not to be too witchy about it. You heard a little of the rage that keeps me going. But it's also fear... (Thread)

"I fear for the world that we've created unless we change course. I fear for my son & his friends. And all of us: it's not just the kids we have to worry about

"I want better for us

And I think that that comes from a place of love

I deeply, deeply love the natural world & find it unbearable to think of the depletion of wonder & beauty & the unnecessary hazards we're creating for people who deserve none of this. And for non-people

"And so, it's a mix of fear, rage and *lots* of love that keeps me going

"And I don't think we have an option to give up. I think *that* is the ultimate luxury product in this age of massive & disgraceful inequality - this idea that we can just kick back and watch it burn

I just have nothing but disdain for the people who imagine that as an option

"Because even imaging that as an option comes from a place of such privilege, the vast majority of people on this planet are just thrown into the fire through no choice of theirs - mostly through choices of ours

"So this is a moment where we really need to decide whose side we're on. And we really need to fight

Coz it is a fight

"And that's one of the things I learned in the Sanders campaign. My god, they came at us, it was a hydra-headed beast...

But the thing I really felt so much is that there's so damn many of us. And people want to come together

"That was the beautiful thing of being part of that campaign - and watching people who had been discarded rise up and say 'We want something better'.

And we got fucking close. We got really close

And I think once you you feel that, once you really feel like, 'Oh actually they lied to us: they told us we were marginal, but we're not: we're many!'

People long to fight for people they don't know and to be part of something bigger than themselves

And once you glimpse that - and goddam Bernie, he gave us all a glimpse of that - we're not going to let go of it.
