Sadly, we knew this was coming, bc record labels have been threatening instead of pivoting since Naptser. Marketing/promo and legal are never on the same page. https://twitter.com/questlove/status/1263943975372718081
Here’s what biz & legal always miss: They’re killing a method of discovery.

1. you’re not gonna increase your revenue by threatening adapters. There is literally no way for DJs to spin in a way where copyright holders get paid. Playlists can’t substitute live mixes.
2. People were hearing songs in DJ sets and going to find them. You just deaded that. DJs are still one of the best ways to get a record hot.

3. Like Verzuz, it’s putting old catalogue back on ppls minds.

4. Y’all look crazy doing that NOW.
The #Verzuz model is safe because most participants own at least a portion of the songs. It’s gonna get tricky moving into R&B artist territory.
But honestly, labels are silly to chase ANYTHING copyright-driven in Lives bc the content only lives for 24hrs. You’re wasting more in manhours than the copyright equivalent is worth.
