I wish we could all stop focusing on the fake debate about whether what's happening in front of our eyes is actually happening, and start talking about why. The GOP is dismantling functioning government, bc their goal is to kill the idea that tax-funded services work
Why engage in pointless 'debates' with trolls disputing that Trump is a corrupt moron? It's proven daily. Instead of everyone doing that, a few can battle trolls & the rest do the real work of articulating a vision for what govt can achieve and HOW WE CAN INSPIRE PEOPLE behind it
A big part of why the GOP is succeeding is that they don't face much opposition on this front. Most of the opposition regularly buys into the frame that government should be limited, hence implicitly is bad, that budgets must be balanced (unless you're funding GOP priorities) etc
NASA is government! They put men on the moon 60 years before Elon Musk could barely dream of getting 1/10th of the way there despite millions of times more computing power to support him, - nobody in the private sector can still come close. Look at the inspiring mission of USPS!
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" - what a beautiful expression of an inspiring social mission of a functioning government agency
Look at awe-inspiring US National Parks. Exact stuff the GOP is trying to kill right now. Where are the rousing renditions of its value? We've spent 30 years promising marginal tax cuts to well-off professionals and barely any time selling the value of what govt does for people
Effective opposition means confronting head-on the society-destroying ideology that "government is the problem" and "locking up all the bad people" is the solution. I'm not saying that's easy. But we don't win if we don't fight
And of course the goal isn't "more", it's "the right amount". If people do not have basic services met, or markets are dysfunctional, monopolized or anti-competitive, then we need MORE active intervention because those things are higher priorities than market cap of FAANG stocks
In other areas, there may well be too much government. Do we need an over-funded military contractor sector, or subsidies for politically connected industries with no overriding social purpose, like car dealerships? No. But not bc *govt is bad* though. It's bc this is corruption
