Friday night ask meme chaos continues but 1 like = 1 movie I love
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975): this place has everything: white dresses, spooky rocks, barely-repressed sapphic longing, an unsolved and unsolvable mystery at its core, lizards, Australians,
RAW (GRAVE) (2017): cannibalism as metaphor for burgeoning sexuality? in MY chaotic vet-school coming of age movie? It’s more common than you think
THE LOVE WITCH (2016): i saw this for the first time on the big screen at the Charles (remember when people went to the movies??) and leaned over about halfway through and said to my friend “this is the greatest movie I’ve ever seen.” countless rewatches have proven me right
UNDER THE SKIN (2013): i loved the book so much that I went into this expecting I would hate it, and i did. But something about it made me want to watch it again, and now it’s like one of my favorite movies ever. it really gets....oh whats the word I’m thinking of....
MILLENNIUM ACTRESS (2001): i can’t tell if this is my favorite Kon or if it’s the one I watched most recently but EITHER way, this is such a lovely and human film and I’m also way overdue for a rewatch of both PERFECT BLUE and PAPRIKA
ONE CUT OF THE DEAD (2017): i dearly wish I could tell you exactly why this film is so dear to me but just trust me. go in completely blind and you’ll be rewarded handsomely
BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (1971): horror movies that believe in evil! We love to see it! Horror is a fundamentally reactionary genre and that’s fine!
DEMONLOVER (2002): if the year 2002 were a movie, this would be it. flat, ugly, sad, and basically a medieval morality tale that starts when our protagonist is well past the point of no return
EVENT HORIZON (1997): schlock. Beautiful, gorgeous schlock. the fact that everything else is made lovingly with human hands makes the terrible floating CGI cup just that much better
REVENGE (2017): if memory serves I saw this right around the Kavanaugh hearings. cathartic, to say the least
THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY (2014): set in a hermetically sealed universe where there are no men and the only jobs are “butterfly scientist” or “sex furniture builder.” There are shoutouts to the perfume and lingerie suppliers in the opening credits. not optional
GINGER SNAPS (2000): if the year 2000 were a movie, this would be i
THE GUEST (2014): it’s dumb, it’s fun, he’s hot, go watch it
READY OR NOT (2019): would this have been my favorite movie of last year if I’d seen it then instead of on VOD this year? dear reader,
DOUBLE LOVER (2017): YEAH it’s a French sex movie that gets at some deep trauma in a way I don’t think anyone was expecting but so what bitch!! So what!
UNDER THE SILVER LAKE (2019): one of my actual favorites from last year. also one of y’all tweeted at me “I didn’t know men could have dimples of Venus but Andrew Garfield does” and I think about that a lot
THE RITUAL (2017): too many movies about women on this list, what about men and how they interact with each other in the wake of trauma? Also this one made me want to hike the King’s Trail in Sweden but only if I like. stay on the path
