In a move that smacks of callow desperation, the Trump Administration reportedly discussed testing a nuclear weapon to scare China to the negotiating table. This is criminal stupidity bordering on malevolence. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/trump-administration-discussed-conducting-first-us-nuclear-test-in-decades/2020/05/22/a805c904-9c5b-11ea-b60c-3be060a4f8e1_story.html
THE US DOES NOT NEED TO TEST NUCLEAR WEAPONS. It's in our interest that no other country does either. If we go down this road, it would likely set off a cascade of nuclear tests around the world landing us right back in an arms race we were lucky to survive the first time.
Superpowers don't bluff. They don't put their own citizens in harm's way to intimidate foes. It's absolutely terrifying that a return to explosive testing for political purposes was ever discussed at the highest levels of our government.
What's most troubling is that test accidents happen. They've happened before. It's shocking that the Trump Admin would even consider a "demonstration test" that could Nevadans & Utahns at risk of potential nuclear fallout. @SenJackyRosen @SenCortezMasto @SenatorRomney @SenMikeLee
If this is the kind of thinking coming from Trump's trilateral arms control team, I have grave concerns about the security of the American people. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/trump-administration-discussed-conducting-first-us-nuclear-test-in-decades/2020/05/22/a805c904-9c5b-11ea-b60c-3be060a4f8e1_story.html
