i usually don't talk about japan's (incredibly long list of) downsides because it makes me the enemy of everyone who dreams of japan, but the homophobia amongst BL fans is just incredible to witness. an uncomfortable amount of BL fans in japan are disgusted by IRL gay folk.

first i have an infamous story from college of a young woman who was stunned to find i had "gay friends" and told me she thought gay people were invented for BL manga and had never hear of real ones. (same woman also thought jewish people had been wiped out to extinction, though)

i don't want this to become the 100-tweet rant-thread it would become if i did not check myself, but just be careful. top/bottom discourse in japan is because "one is a woman and one is a man to us, if a woman puts a penis into a man, it is disgusting" <--real thing i read

and the thread i just RTed where the categories in japan are boy's love, girl's love and normal love. some japanese people do fight such homophobia (such as the person in the RT) but do not think you are loved or welcome in japan because it produces so much BL/GL. it's rough.
