I'm watching a performance by the 1975 from 2013 and I'm just fully clicking how many bands are just doing exactly what they did 7 years ago, today
imitation is the highest form of flattery and all that, was arctic monkeys when I first started out, wonder who'll be the next one?
catfish and sam fender on a smaller scale I suppose, but the uk was overrun with arctic monkeys copies for years. still a canny few knocking about today.
oasis > arctic monkeys > the 1975, I suppose any indie band worth their salt should aim to be the next name on that list
this isn't meant to be a snobby take, all of those bands are amazing and have fantastic songs so of course they inspire people to emulate them, sometimes wearing your influences on your sleeve can be a good thing
but in doing that you're effectively putting yourself out of the running to be the next name on that list
there's obviously more than the ones I've mentioned, but those three I feel are the ones I see carbon copies of most often in the local indie scene
mostly young lads though, 16/17, who go through that phase and mature into more well rounded songwriters/performers from that experience. it's not a negative thing at all.
very rare you can burst onto the scene age 16 with a total culture bending original sound, it's all a process innit
