I& #39;m watching a performance by the 1975 from 2013 and I& #39;m just fully clicking how many bands are just doing exactly what they did 7 years ago, today
imitation is the highest form of flattery and all that, was arctic monkeys when I first started out, wonder who& #39;ll be the next one?
catfish and sam fender on a smaller scale I suppose, but the uk was overrun with arctic monkeys copies for years. still a canny few knocking about today.
oasis > arctic monkeys > the 1975, I suppose any indie band worth their salt should aim to be the next name on that list
this isn& #39;t meant to be a snobby take, all of those bands are amazing and have fantastic songs so of course they inspire people to emulate them, sometimes wearing your influences on your sleeve can be a good thing
but in doing that you& #39;re effectively putting yourself out of the running to be the next name on that list
there& #39;s obviously more than the ones I& #39;ve mentioned, but those three I feel are the ones I see carbon copies of most often in the local indie scene
mostly young lads though, 16/17, who go through that phase and mature into more well rounded songwriters/performers from that experience. it& #39;s not a negative thing at all.
very rare you can burst onto the scene age 16 with a total culture bending original sound, it& #39;s all a process innit
