Drives me wild that lots of folks don’t see higher education as an export sector where the US does very well
So many tweets and comments about how foreigners are taking US students’ spots or should be “grateful” for US education
Both of these only make nativist logic, and the former in particular fails to comprehend that decline in public support for higher ed means that even state schools turned to foreign students as ways of staying afloat
And although many/most foreign students at all levels in the US have a good experience on the whole (and thereby contribute to US good relations), some to many are outright scammed
Anyway, one of our export sectors is crumbling at the moment. And a lot of folks are cheering it on. And then they’ll be angry at some other scapegoat when they’re poorer and sicker than they would have been
