What caught my eye in THE video, putting aside all the wild dialogues, was Bolsonaro’s concerns over the Chinese intelligence and its activities here — and the role the US might be playing on how he views this issue. It’s precisely one of the bits justice Mello chose to censor.
Here you see Bolsonaro is not only worried about intelligence services because of internal issues... Here is what he says:
“I was looking, studying over the weekend here how the Chinese secret service works int he US. What is our concern here? [CENSORED] It’s a simple deal. ‘Oh, you shouldn’t say it publicly.’ How should I say it? Everyone can see what’s happening. [CENSORED]
“(...) It’s a reality. There is no point in hiding it anymore, sugar-coat it, OK? (...) In some ministries, their people are planted inside, right? [Chinese spies?] So we don’t want to fight with [CENSORED], no fight with [CENSORED]. Do we need them to sell? Yes.
“They need us too! Because if they didn't need us, they wouldn’t be buying soy from us, no. They need us. It's a business, damn it. And we should align ourselves with those who have an affinity with us. (...)
“There is no point in hiding here, and then we have a problem, and call the uncle [Uncle Sam?]. ‘Hey, uncle.’ I’m gonna say, ‘damn it, man, you've me ignored me until now!’ You only didn’t call me imperialist, like the left and FHC [former president] did in the past, the rest...
Now, it’s too late. [This is the] strategic issue we are not [paying attention to?]... And I’m sorry, our information services, all of them, are shameful, shameful!”
Brazil is in the middle of what some people worry will become a new Cold War of sorts between China and the United States. Bolsonaro’s views on this issue might have greater implications in a not so far-away future.
