THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION IN THE FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996) A THREAD:

So on the surface it seems like Goldie Hawn has all the wardrobe superpowers in this movie. However that's a mere illusion because we all remember so vividly her (outstanding) leather pantsuit from the Finale.
She looks fierce.

Of course.

But my goodness Diane Keaton is WELL DRESSED in this film. She's giving executive independent business woman realness throughout. Its chic. Its modern. Its timeless. Pinstripes. High waists. Shes powerful. In a very different way to Goldie.
And then we have Bette.

Bette. Midler.

She begins the film drowning in her own clothes. She is wounded and fractured and had her confidence bruised and battered like nobody's business.
(Still Bette)

As she realises throughout the movie that she is way more culturally significant than both SJP and whoever plays her husband her clothes become a SYMBOL of her CONFIDENCE GROWING and she is giving us CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH COSTUME DESIGN.
(Still Bette)

The bold colours remind us that she is confident and fiery, and she was all along. But now she can express it THROUGH GARMENTS. The purple skirt suit. The orange blazer. Its bold. Its bright. Its Bette. We wouldn't have it any other way.
There is a whole other version of this thread for Dame Maggie Smith's weaves in this film. Its a little too complex for a wine induced Friday.

When it comes to women's fashion in this movie, there are no losers. Except maybe SJP who serves retail Carrie Bradshaw throughout.
The combination of Bette, Diane and Goldie's fashion in this film are a narrative in and of itself. They are, much like Brenda, Annie and Elise, at their most powerful when they work together.

Goodnight.

Don't get even. Get everything.
