Hey Animal Twitter need help solving a mystery that involves this nasty wound on my dog. It all started about three weeks ago...

First, some background. We live in a semi wooded area in metro Detroit near a lake and a swamps across the street. Lots of wildlife around. Whitetail deer, turkeys, 1 billion squirrels, a number of woodchucks, raccoons, etc.

Three weeks ago we found a deceased deer laying in my next-door neighbors’ front yard. It was a young-ish deer, and no signs of illness. Lots of meat on the bone.

I visually inspected it and found a few small wounds on its hind leg, a few around it’s shoulder area, and a deeper one near its backbone about 8 inches up from the tail. None of the wounds were substantial. No blood, etc. Just somewhat fresh marks that went deeper than the fur.

But it also had some blood coming out of his mouth. Called the DNR and they agreed it didn’t seem like disease. But they weren’t very helpful in helping me understand what may have led to its death. And because of Covid they wouldn’t come out and inspect the deer, understandably

So I called City Hall, and they had some maintenance workers come and pick it up. I wasn’t there when they came So I didn’t learn anything more about what may have led to its death.

I assumed there was some logical explanation and didn’t think much about it after that.

Fast forward to today. My family and I get home from picking up dinner, and let the dog out of the car to go do her business in the yard. Normally she wears an electric fence collar but since she came with us, we had taken it off I didn’t put it back on before letting her go out.

We head to the house to drop off dinner and then a few minutes later my wife goes back into the garage to get some dog food for the dogs dinner. I hear her scream and head outside and see the dog and her bloody bloody face

According to my wife she had come running from across the street between two of our neighbors houses. There’s some small trees bushes and overgrowth between the houses. But our first guess was that it was possibly the neighbors German Shepherd. Which would’ve been weird because

Their dog pals and play all the time. While my wife is calling the vet ER, I called the neighbors and ask if their dog is inside. It is.

The neighbor kids and my wife spend some time looking around while I take dog to the ER but they didn’t find anything that could explain what wounded the dog.

I’m currently waiting at the vet ER while they triage and treat her. She seems to be missing some teeth on the bottom jaw and definitely a big hunk of flesh. But I’m not sure they’ll be able to tell us what happened

My question for you, animal Twitter is threefold. 1) WTF killed the deer. 2) WTF hurt my dog and 3) are these things connected?
