Parasite (2019) is a blatant rip-off of Over The Hedge (2006)
(Thread)
Both films are social commentaries regarding class differences. The animal family in Over the Hedge constantly struggle for food which is a necessity to living. In parasite, the Kim family live in poverty and struggle to get stable jobs to pay for food
This is contrasted with the upper-class system of the humans whom of which hoard all of these resources from those who do not have access to them, such as the animal family. The Park family also hoard these very same resources from the lower-class such as the Kim family
The lower-class decides to cleverly retaliate against the oppressive upper-class by stealing the resources that have been selfishly hoarded from the have-nots. The same is done in Parasite.
Vincent and RJ have to fight over the sparse amount of food. But what they fail to realize is that it is the upper-class that they should be fighting- not one another. This same nuance is stolen in Parasite with the Kim family and Moon-Kwang with her husband
The lower-class is then left with only one option and that is to fight back against the upper-class for their greed and classist oppression. Ultimately defeating the upper-class and showing what happens when you consistently make the poor poorer and the rich richer.
What I love about Over The Hedge is that after their triumphant victory they are still faced with being stuck in the lower-class bubble unable to progress. It’s a sad ending but is unfortunately true. They are still and will always be behind the hedge. Parasite does the same shit
I’m not necessarily saying that Bong Joon-ho ripped-off the 2006 cult classic “Over The Hedge”. But I will say that if he did then i would laugh at how he thought he could get away with this. He may have won numerous Oscars for his film but his legacy is now tainted by fraud.
