I've been meaning to do this, but I'm done with my first year of my PhD. Here's a few takeaways:
Study with others! Do it, do it, do it! Be a goofball and have all sorts of econ jokes. Make the subjects so commonplace they become second nature. I think this is the best way to learning; conversing with others and filling in the gaps for each other.
To contrast the previous point; definitely make sure you're at a point where you can have a conversation. Like learning any language, if the fundamentals aren't there, it might be difficult. Walk away from the group study, rest, and look over things again.
Rest. The brain can only go so long. Be honest with yourself about when is the best time for academic work for you. Do things to distress.
Midway through the spring, when shit hit the fan with COVID-19, I had to be easier on myself. I slept a lot more for some reason. I needed to start my day later and I only did so much because I felt as though I needed to do things that helped me find my balance first.
Most of my friends experienced a drop in productivity; not acknowledging lethargy can be worse when you try too hard and fail to meet your expectations for the day.
Building new habits was difficult; in fact, I don't think I ever nailed it before COVID, def not after. But, I started thinking about getting distractions out of the way (organizing room, video games, phone) and started using apps like Freedom or just putting my phone elsewhere.
I'll probably add more to this thread but I'm also doing taking part in a discussion on Instagram live from 6-7 PM EST on Monday (May 25th). I will provide a link to anyone interested. #phdlife
