Had a chance to chat with an old Army buddy today. Always nice. And she reminded me of a guy were used to work with.
Guy came into the recruiting station as a Staff Sergeant. He was what's we'd now call a 92G. A cook. Absolutely the nicest guy you'd ever meet in the Army. And he liked to bake. Well, shit brother, I like to make coffee. We're gonna get along.
I mean, he's not the most martial guy. Always proper, just not hardcore.
As it turns out, he's FANTASTIC recruiter. He just was easy to get along with. That goes a LONG way when recruiting.

His job before recruiting, he was an orderly for a three star. Dude could shine shoes!
Unfortunately for him, he was black. In northern Indiana. There's black communities. Like Gary. Then there's Highland. Highland was white. Really fucking white.
He was getting pulled over almost every morning heading to our office. I'm not sure what they wrote on the citations, but the real crime was DWB. Driving While Black.
Guys, this is not thug life. This is a dude making me coffee cake.
I like coffee cake. Called the 1SG and asked if I could put in a call to the battalion commander (always let your bosses know). He greenlights me.
I call. Explain what's going on. One of your STAR recruiters is getting shit on.

Bad things happen in the Army. But local cops being dicks is not a good look. Leadership is gonna react.
Two days later, my Battalion Commander who I've got about 10 seconds of face time with shows in my office with a guy in a suit.
SGT B, let's go visit the Highland Police Department.
Well, hop in the car, sir.
It's a whopping 2 minute drive. We get there. You've been in a police station lobby? It's what we now call a secure environment.

Battalion CO asks politely to speak to the Chief of Police. Desk Sergeant kinda politely tells my CO to go fuck himself.
The civilian finally speaks. "Really, letting the Chief know we'd like to chat is a good idea."

Again something of a polite version of fuck you.
Civilian again-
"Desk Sergeant, I don't think you understand. I'm the United States Attorney for this district. I've got nothing better to than spend the rest of my career hitting your department with warrants and subpoenas to make sure you're not fucking with Soldiers. "
Amazingly, my friend wasn't pulled over. Pretty sure he could have done a drive by and they'd just wave hello.
