Now that ATLA is on Netflix:

GIVE #LegendOfKorra (LOK) a chance. This thread is purely my own opinion and am under no impression that I will change any minds. I understand just not liking it, or preferring ATLA, but people just openly SHIT all over LOK because it’s “not ATLA”
IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE! Team Avatar’s story was told beautifully, as is. I love and cherish it so much, but I’d rather have three seasons that wrap up the storyline perfectly, than extending it with more “The Great Divides” Plus, there are comic books that continue on the GAang
The storyline of LOK goes so much deeper than ATLA, and gets much darker, hitting on issues like discrimination, disadvantaged social classes leading to a revolution, power dynamics, sense of self, imposter’s syndrome, PTSD, among countless others.
I absolutely LOVE the world building in Korra. The world is realistic, but in a way that still relates to the Avatar universe. The use of bending for entertainment and law enforcement modernizes it, while also setting the precedent for the divide between benders and non-benders.
LOK has its fill of strong female characters. Korra’s character development, is *almost* as good as Zuko’s. Asami, using technology for herself. Jinora, a powerful bender at such a young age. Then there’s the Beifong/Yin family, Kya, Kuvira, Ming-Hua, Zhu Li, and more.
I also LOVE how three-dimensional all the villains are. Ozai was portrayed as an evil, heinous monster. In LOK, you can see their point of view, which humanizes them and makes them more relatable, even if what they did is wrong. Which, I think, is more representative of real life
The fight scenes are also much more intense, which is a personal preference, but I love them. Aang’s style is obviously much more passive, but Korra is aggressive and swift, and the animation is done beautifully.
Korra seems to be the most unappealing for many. Shes hot-headed, confrontational. Or, shes a role model for young girls that they don’t have to fit anyone else’s mold of who they should be. In the story, shes bashed for being too aggressive, out of story, for not being like Aang
Was Aang anything like Roku, or Kyoshi, or any of his past lives? No. Sure there are similarities, but the Avatar isn’t supposed to be the same person in every lifetime. By being different, unique, it adds more perspective and understanding.
She also goes through SO much pain in each season, arguably more than Aang ever went through, physically, at least. It actively changed who she was and how she saw things, which was beautiful.
In summary, watch LOK. But when you do, let go of your ATLA biases and don’t compare them. Appreciate LOK for what it is: its own series, with little Easter eggs to the original.
Also, we HAVE to appreciate Korrasami
