And in today’s episode of “The Localization Team Did This Villager Dirty”

Coco (やよい Yayoi), is based off of Japanese haniwa, which were hollow clay figures typically placed on top of burial mounds during the Kofun period.

She’s not a coconut or a cookie, despite her name.
Additional info:

• I said Kofun period because that was when they were most prevalent. However, the origin of haniwa is dated to be from end of the Yayoi period, hence Coco’s Japanese name.

• Haniwa range in a variety of shapes from plain cylinders, to houses, to animals.
• The purpose of placing haniwa on burial mounds is unclear, but there’s speculations they may have been used to signify wealth or for protection.

• The Gyroids in old AC games were also based off of haniwa (they’re straight up called はにわ (haniwa)). In ACNH, we have Lloid!
