Listen up, cause this mama is fighting for her 8yo #GirlScout and I& #39;m gonna need you to RT and help blow this up.
My 8yo Brownie busted her butt in February to sell 650+ boxes of cookies. Why? Because she had her heart set on going to a 5 day sleep away camp (ya know, take a bus trip, sleep in a cabin, the whole nine). She worked for it and SHE EARNED IT.
And then #COVID19 happened. A few #GirlScouts activities got cancelled, but we waited patiently. Her camp session wasn& #39;t booked until the end of July, so we thought she& #39;d still get to go.
Nope. In April (which, btw, is Month of the #MilitaryChild) @GirlScouts SD announced that all summer camps were being cancelled. My 8yo was heartbroken over the news. I was heartbroken to see her little dream crushed.
But I presented her with the alternatives: a virtual camp in, a brunch cruise (date TBD), donating food/face masks, donating her week of camp to another girl next year OR saving her week of camp for next year and being able to earn a second week with next year& #39;s cookie sales.
Can you guess which option lit up her eyes?
The possibility of TWO weeks next year had her even more excited. But there& #39;s a catch. (because of course there is.)
We& #39;re a military family. There is a very high possibility that we will not be in the San Diego area next summer. Which means, we wouldn& #39;t be around for summer camp.
But hey, no big deal. Cause mommy has email and can email @GirlScouts and we can find a solution to this issue. We can see if we can do camp where the military sends us!
So I reached out to our council. Was immediately told, "No. Camps are not transferrable." And while yes, I can understand that under normal circumstances, this is not a thing that& #39;s done...these are not normal circumstances.
No one could have foreseen that all the summer camps were going to be cancelled this year. If I knew summer camp this year wasn& #39;t an option, I would have urged her to pick a different prize as her cookie reward goal.
And I refuse (REFUSE) to believe than organization as massive as @GirlScouts does not have systems in place to support girls from military families.
My kid literally earned a badge last month that reads: Girl Scouts Salutes Military Children! But our council won& #39;t help us let her keep her camp reward nor will they help us reach out to another council to see what they can do from their end.
Here& #39;s what I see: My kid being punished for being part of a military family. An organization that will salute my kid, but not support her.
Listen, we& #39;re a military fam and we get it -- life is ALWAYS uncertain and unstable for us. We deal with moving every few years, deployments, etc. The only constant thing in our lives is adapting to all the change.
I cannot believe this organization doesn& #39;t have systems in place to help military kids. I cannot believe they wouldn& #39;t even TRY to make this situation right.
I mean she sold a crap ton of Thin Mints for you, but you can& #39;t send her to camp in a different state just because it& #39;s a different council in charge? Nah fam. You can send her to camp. You just don& #39;t want to.
. @GirlScouts needs to do better for their girls who are part of military families. We can& #39;t be the only military family this is or has happened to. Military kids deserve better. (if you& #39;re a fellow #milspouse or part of the #GirScouts organization, let me hear your thoughts)
And if you wanna hear me go off on IG -- I posted about this yesterday in my stories and it& #39;s saved in my highlights. https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17856413122954474/">https://www.instagram.com/stories/h... #milspouse #militarykids #girlscouts
