As late as 1957 (merely three years before the independence of most African nations), William F. Buckley, a leading Western conservative wrote an article titled, "Why the South must Prevail" in the National Review (which he edited).
You can't blame Africa's Independence generation for leaning towards socialism - if you understand the context in the 1950s and 1960s. Western conservatives were still obsessed then with the "inferiority of the Black Man", the economic arguments came later.
Yes, the embraced socialism. Yes, they made mistakes, but they were still able to organise themselves to accomplish something.

What has our generation accomplished, save a smug satisfaction that "we know more about economics than our parents"?
