The church is essential because the people of God, together, constitute a hermeneutic of the gospel (Newbigin). Even in our imperfection, we are a sign, instrument and foretaste of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We never open; we never close. We are. Do we lament when we cannot image the incarnation and be together "in the flesh"? Yes. But are we defeated? No. Mr. President - you are not a bishop, pastor, nor overseer. The church is the church whether gathered or scattered.

As we celebrate the Ascension and approach Pentecost, we do not forget who we are and how we are. Even so, Come Lord Jesus.
