I don't agree with Nandi Madida's advice. For various reasons.
It is not lost to me that she is a star. And her celebrity status is what annoys me more about her post. But more on that later.

The average South African is lost to/in the system between 18-25. Most never come out.
And sometimes we forget who the average South African is. Coz we think it's the rich Blacks we see on The Queen or Madam and Mercy or Shauwn Mkhize's reality show. But the average South African is front line worker at Shoprite right now. During a pandemic. Being exploited.
The average South African isn't laaying around after highschool, having parties and living it large. Their lives are too desperate for that.
We fucking had a Cutting Edge episode that showed the plight of just a section of Rural EC. ANC voters who will vote for them again in 4 years were horrified with us that day, it was the smallest glimpse to just how tough it is for some people here.
And here's my problem with that statement: There's a person out there. In their late 20s. Probably with permanent responsibilities already. Feeling like they've messed up and can't go back. Ordinarily the road back to their dreams would have been harder...
But they were starting to believe. And were starting to have that hope. That drive ba no matter what, I will get back on track. Before u do anything u need to have that conviction ba ni matter how tricky the road gets, I'm up to it...
And they would be right. the judge at Oscar Pistorious' trial was in her 40s when she studied law. The road back to your dreams can happen later on than your peers. Indlela azfani. There's nothing wrong. But here's why Nandis statement annoys me..
I studied and befriended people who were in their 40s when they were chasing their original goals. And I noticed kubo that there was a fragility in this. Studying later on. They had peers who had made it already. They wondered if they were getting back on track too late
They won't say it, but seeing kids as young as their first borns killed them everyday inside. They knew why they signed up for this, but they're still human, they still have the lingering doubt. What if one of them is reading that status?
And u can't tell me adults have no peer pressure. Adult peer pressure is deadlier than teenage peer pressure. More toxic. Adult peer pressure is friends telling someone who wants to go back to school "siskolo oskhathalele nganto esi una36 unabantwana" that thing sticks to some
That's what annoys me. Coz there's a 29 year old who was thinking of signing up kwi Unisa, but probably won't coz she read what Nandi wrote. And we can't write off that 29 y/olds emotions, as I've discussed, age doesn't sometimes galvanize u from the world weighing u down
We had little girls wanting Sho Madjozi braids coz they see and wanna mimic. Before Zozi made a fade cool, Nandi had girls going to salons wanting fades. If she had social pull to have fans wanting to look like her, what's to say they won't digest her words and viewpoints?
