1. An intelligent person who comes from a working class background really ought to say something about the so-called intellectuals claiming to fight for the working class. It seems they are more focused on scoring points than they are easing the suffering of the most exploited.
2. I suppose I'll go first. The working class, the real working class, is not interested in revolution. They are interested in what most out-groups are interested in. First, not being used. Second, being treated humanely. Third, being recognized as equal citizens.
The real working class, the one that tends to vote Democratic if people bother to vote at all, is pragmatic to the extent that it has a vision. They don't care how they reach their goals as long as the goals are reached.
This means the means can be democratic or they can be authoritarian, and it also means the working class can be quite illiberal, if not downright conservative. And I have even mentioned factions within the working class.
*haven't
These factions have different goals or even opposing goals and there's never been a moment in working class history in which the white working class has not climbed over the heads of the non-white working class on its way to meeting its goals.
What's missing in a lot of leftist intellectual writing is an honest perspective about the working class. They are mostly heroes or victims, not human beings with flaws and rights to dignity and respect despite that.
What's really missing is an understanding of what life is like for the working class. I mean an intimate knowledge. This requires a certain kind of background, a certain kind of authority that goes will experiencing or just witnessing the injustice of unfree markets.
I'm sure a guy who went to Yale Law and wear a panama hat with velvet vest has a lot of interesting things to say, but don't tell me he has much to say about the working class. He knows dick.
Not only does he know dick but his insisting that he does is infuriating. A walk through the Wyoming County Fair would be nostalgic to me, but for me, it'd be like an African safari during which he could commune with the "natives."
Fucking maddening.
