This week we're posting about the #VarietyOfOT

Follow our threads this week for the WHO, WHERE, WHAT, WHEN and HOW of occupational therapy!

Day 5: How do OTs know what works?
All occupational therapy practice should be informed by evidence.

Two sets of guidelines that OT students and OTs follow in practice tell us (see next post).

RCOT code of ethics - https://www.rcot.co.uk/sites/default/files/CODE-OF-ETHICS-2015_0.pdf

HCPC standards of proficiency for OTs - https://www.hcpc-uk.org/standards/standards-of-proficiency/occupational-therapists/
We are trained at uni to read research for all kinds of #OT practice, but clinical experience/reasoning, and service user perspectives are also valuable forms of evidence.

That's why clinical placement experience is so helpful for the learning and development of future OTs!
The Royal College of Occupational Therapists have a huge variety of resources for all British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT) members.

All YSJ OT students are members of BAOT.

(note: COT is RCOT, before it got royal approval 👑)
There are many sources of evidence OTs and OT students use to inform their work, including:

The RCOT Library - https://www.rcot.co.uk/practice-resources/library-resources/about-library
The Cochrane Library - https://www.cochranelibrary.com/
NICE evidence search - https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists make their position statements available, which can be very useful for informing occupational therapy practice.
There are so many - #VarietyOfOT

The #occupationaltherapy profession is continually changing and developing.

New ideas emerge that can change the way we think about occupation and add to the profession.

Most of all, OTs know what works because our service users work with us to help us understand their individual needs and show us what works for them 😁
