Symbols of hate start out as small, innocuous things.
It’s not the thing itself, although that gains inherent power & meaning, the same as a peace symbol, or a cross.
It’s the fact that it’s a calling card.
It’s the thing that says “you are my kind of person.”
MAGA hats are that.
I don’t know what the intention was in Todd Muller buying a MAGA hat and what was behind the decision to display in his office.
I do know what MAGA hats symbolise.
Hate.
Indifference.
Rage.
Fear.
Hatred of women, of people who threaten a very particular (& imaginary) way of life.
MAGA hats symbolise indifference to people who are disproportionately affected by US immigration policies.
Rage against women, esp. women who are progressive.
Fear of people who do not look like they do -predominantly white, predominantly male.
Todd Muller may not think this way.
Todd Muller’s record will speak for itself and journalism will be vital in advising the public in this respect.

It will be vital to see his record regarding people who don’t look like him - that, for me, will be his calling card.

But, for me, displaying a MAGA hat is, too.
Symbols have power.
Look at the “okay” sign.
Symbols tell a story & they call us to our tribes.
No matter the original intention, the fact that this is a fire that has not been well & truly quashed says a great deal.
There are MAGAs in NZ -predominantly white, predominantly male.
They might not live in the US, but they point out, a great deal, just how much better the imaginary past was, when a woman wasn’t in charge & kindness wasn’t a thing.
When racism was easy, when you could make a sexist joke and it was funny.
Fear is dangerous. So is ignorance.
We live in a country that is better, & growing, & learning.

Let’s be vigilant about keeping moving forward.

Let’s be vigilant about calling out the voices who in this election will hearken back to the good old days that didn’t exist.

Hate starts as a small, innocuous thing./
*Reckons brought to you because “lol it’s just a hat” doesn’t really take into account the very real people that those weird, crazy hat-wearers disproportionately affect with their hatred and the tangible impacts on their lives.

Politics is a game only for those with privilege.
