As a linguist, waving is a brilliant solution to bridge the sudden disappearance at the end of a video call: esp in a group, when you can see everyone& #39;s waving, you know they& #39;re all ready to leave

It& #39;s like standing up, picking up your coat/bag - transitional movements https://twitter.com/claremackint0sh/status/1263481311907504128">https://twitter.com/claremack...
A gesture linguist (who I happen to videochat with a lot) agrees! https://twitter.com/superlinguo/status/1263696495800279040">https://twitter.com/superling...
One of the big differences with walking out of a meeting room vs a videocall is that you can still expect to see someone in the hallway after a physical meeting, which is not the case at all in videochat!

So we do need a fuller farewell, which a wave can accomplish!
As @kirbyconrod said very well a few days ago, linguists spend a lot of time telling people they& #39;re ok

If you& #39;re communicating differently in a different environment, it& #39;s ok to think, hey, maybe this is an entirely reasonable adaptation to circumstances! https://twitter.com/kirbyconrod/status/1262133963109232640">https://twitter.com/kirbyconr...
Yes! It& #39;s really exciting and excellent that we& #39;ve all been converging on this great adaptation to bridging an awkward moment! https://twitter.com/BethSkw/status/1263907767259148288">https://twitter.com/BethSkw/s...
Also a cool use of waving!

(I also use the parallel chat function for acknowledging new arrivals, but the chat is more prevalent in some circumstances than others) https://twitter.com/ElizdAnjou/status/1263908493972721675">https://twitter.com/ElizdAnjo...
There& #39;s also earlier research on paired exchanges for closing a telephone convo:

Alright
Right
Okay
Well
Good then
Better let you go
Bye now
Bye
Bye

This looks a bit strange written out, but it& #39;s a bridge instead of just hanging up abruptly! https://twitter.com/DrewHicken/status/1263908692518473730">https://twitter.com/DrewHicke...
Exactly, and waving also works great even if some people are on mute! https://twitter.com/PsycheReady/status/1263908830108200962">https://twitter.com/PsycheRea...
If you want to think more about gesture linguistics, we did an episode of @lingthusiasm about it!

(It& #39;s a special video episode, so you can see the gesture, but also available in regular podcast audio form and as a written transcript) https://youtu.be/u8dHtr7uLHs ">https://youtu.be/u8dHtr7uL...
