2 books I would recommend my friends to read:

1) The Production of Hindu-Muslim violence in contemporary India by Paul Brass
2) Khaki and Ethnic violence in India by Omar Khalidi

These books will give you a fair idea of what India state has done & is doing to Muslims in India.
Only and only when we know what the problem we're facing, will we able to explore all the possible solutions to it. I am of the belief that Indian state has been inherently biased towards Muslims since the partition & our struggle shouldn't be limited to a particular govt.
That does not mean that we fight the state. I am merely saying that instead of letting these so called secular parties negotiate with the state for on our issues, we - as a community negotiate directly. For this we need our own autonomous & independent political agency.
For reference to independent political agency, see what Dalit leader Chandrashekhar Azad says vis a vis his community. That is exactly the kind of politics I dream for us as well.
Note: I'm not recommending these books because they explain all that is happening/or has happened to Muslims in India but because these two books discuss riots, communal tension, role of police and the structure of police & army in India. These topics seem relevant so that's why.
