I guess "priest" had too much religious connotation for Viz.

The characters on Yamcha's hideout, "千錘百煉" basically translate to a Chinese martial arts idiom about continuously honing your skills.
Obviously, it wouldn't fit into a narrow space as English, but the choice of "Kung Pao" in its place is really odd.

Muten Roshi is described in the English translation as a "stinky" old man, which, isn't a recurring trait of his I'd say. I think the translator saw that he was originally described as a "'Funky' Grandpa" and saw funky as stinky/musty rather than unconventional/eccentric.

It’s easy to forget that Ox King used to be a villain, and that the Muten Roshi expresses disappointment in how he’s “strayed from the path” so to speak That probably explains why he’s his least favorite pupil it seems.

I thought Yamcha was about the same age as Bulma, 16. And I would think Chi Chi is about the same age as Goku (12), granted a four year age difference is still pretty yucky to me..,

I’ve been thinking about how odd of a localization choice it is to call Pilaf and co. the “Reich Pilaf” and I looked at the original text, which uses “一味” to describe them, which can basically mean “gang.” You know, the Pilaf Gang, like how they’re usually called.

“Hanakuso no himitsu o… sotto hanakusō!!” (“Let’s softly tell them… the secret of our snot!”) - Kanzeshuu’s Chapter Guides
Basically, it’s a pun on “hanakuso” (snot) and “hana” (talk/tell).

The localized translation likes adding in attempted wordplay when it wasn’t implied in the original text for this chapter.
That “udon” one is straight up awful.

The Muten Roshi asks for a “Pichi Pichi” (Spunky) Gal, To which Goku mistakes this as a “Bichi Bichi” (Floppy) Gag.

Uh, wow, this was seriously uncalled for in the localization.
He basically says in the original that Goku’s inability to tell which girl is hotter is troubling, nothing about chromosomes or whatever.

Oh I love this pun.
Kuririn says that Goku doesn’t look like he does martial arts, to which Goku replies that he likes grapes.
Both the word for martial arts and grapes share a similar pronunciation (budou) in Japanese.

And if you look closely here, you can see that Lunch/Launch is mistakenly drawn in her peaceful blue-haired form while in the middle of a getaway, a couple panels before her blonde self sneezes to revert back.

The way Kuririn politely speaks reminds me of the Buddhist monks who live at the monastery my family goes to, and well, that perfectly fits Kuririn given his backstory.

The localization is really going for that cheesy stereotypical martial arts vibe because Kuririn doesn’t even call him “sensei” in the original, he just says “yoroshiku onegaishimasu” which works perfectly as the used “we are honored.”

Even with the monochrome reprint of the "originally in-color when first published in Shonen Jump" pages, you can see that Goku is notably tanner than Kuririn and most other characters. Of course, this wasn't really kept in the anime or even the digitalized full-color release.

The Dragon Ball English localization, as a localization, tends to choose English equivalents for Japanese honorifics.
...except in this case where they keep it in.
