Howdy, all! It's Virginia. Thanks 4 joining again for #InternFriday. My semi-secure, undisclosed location this week is just my desk. I'm taking a break to tweet @ ya b/w summer classwork. Wish *I* had a fancy @inteldotgov mug but one from our nation's capital will have to do.
Even though my mug is from D.C, I don't have to actually be there to intern for @ODNIgov. In fact, I can be anywhere - wifi required
, coffee preferred
. That's the beauty of the @VSFSatState program. And today, I'm gonna tell you how you can get involved

So my fellow students, listen up - this thread is for you. (If you’re not a student, pass this on to someone you know. Or, hey, maybe consider going back to school so you can be eligible. The choice, as they say, is yours
)

The @VSFSatState program allows any college student (U.S citizen, a must) to remotely intern for govt agencies. For the 2019-20 school year, more than 600 projects were available from 50+ agencies, seeking almost 3000 interns. I'm not the best with numbers, but that's a lot!
Of course, the Intel Community gets in on the virtual action - if they didn't, I wouldn't be tweeting today. Last year, IC-relevant agencies who received interns included @ODNIgov, @CIA, @DHSgov, @StateDept, @USCG, and @ENERGY.
I'm fortunate enough to be a 2nd-year VSFS intern. I loved it so much last year that I applied again and lucked out being with the folks at @inteldotgov. I've gotten to work on some great projects, under dedicated mentors who, I think, are making a difference in public service.
I know I'm biased, but VSFS has given me great experience, connections, and a window into what I want my future career to be. If you're like me, I wanted government experience but didn't know a way in the door. VSFS is one way to get that.
And you're in luck, because applications for 2020-21 open July 1! So if you're a STEM genius
, coding guru
, writing/research fiend
, social media genius
, or something in between, there’s sure to be a project you'll be interested in.

Pretty soon I'll hopefully be able to share more about what my fellow interns have accomplished this term. But until then, check out this article from http://Intel.gov about the intern class from a couple years ago. They left big shoes to fill: https://www.intelligence.gov/index.php/careers/career-news/802-odni-virtual-interns-make-a-difference-while-learning-about-the-ic
Looking ahead to post-pandemic life
, the IC also has opportunities for students to work in-person at many agencies. For one, the @CIA, our nation's chief gatherer of overseas intel, has internships and scholarships for undergrad and grad students. https://www.cia.gov/careers/student-opportunities/index.html

If domestic cases are more your speed, @FBI has opportunities for students, both college and high school: https://www.fbijobs.gov/students/
@NGA_GEOINT, experts on all things (geospatial intelligence
), has intern programs, too: https://www.nga.mil/Careers/StudentOpp/Pages/default.aspx

And, I’m not done yet! @NSAGov, leaders in technology and cryptology, also are looking for students. https://www.intelligencecareers.gov/NSA/nsastudentsportal.html
And those are just some of the more well-known IC agencies. Don't forget about the programs at: @NatReconOfc: https://www.nro.gov/Careers-and-Internships/Student-Opportunities/ and @DefenseIntel: https://www.dia.mil/careers-and-internships/students/.
If you've stuck with me this far, I have two things to say:
thank you for riding out this thread with me, and
visit https://vsfs.state.gov for more info about the VSFS program. You've probably got lots of experience in working remotely by now, so go forth and be great

Well, another assignment is calling my (non-code) name, so it's time for me to refill my trusty tourist mug and go. Wonder what would happen if I put *Virginia* as my name on my classwork? Time for more
for sure. Hope to see y'all back next week. Until then,
out! - Virginia
