Cities used to compete for jobs and tax revenue by attracting companies. In the era of remote work, they will compete to attract knowledge workers. Individuals can relocate much more easily than companies. This will swiftly reward competent cities and punish incompetent ones.
Unresponsive cities must learn to adapt or risk a death spiral. And yes, I’m talking to cities with poop on their streets, as an example. You should expect a substantial portion of your tax base to pull up stakes and leave if you can’t solve that problem.
