Pala Casino, Spa and Resort was among the first casinos to open this morning and I would say that it's fairly busy for a Friday morning. The first floor of the parking garage was full though there were spaces on the upper floor.
I got to the front entrance where a casino employee used a touchless temperature-checking device that reminded me of a price scanner at a supermarket. He held the device about 12" from my forehead and pressed down on a button for a few seconds before motioning me in.
From what I can tell there are no physical plastic barriers in place between the slot machines on the casino floor at Pala, but in places where slot machines are arranged in rows every other machine is turned off.
The turned off machines have a sign taped to them that says, "This game is currently not available to play. If you would like to play it, please press the 'Service' button and one of our Slot Team Members will be able to assist you."
Slot machines in rows have every other machine turned off; slot machines which have been positioned outward in a circular formation are all on.
Most of the table games are limited to three chairs each and the table game dealers are wearing full-on plastic face shields.
Harrah's Resort Southern California is not far from here and they open at noon so we will be checking them out next.
I just got to Harrah's Resort SoCal in Valley Center. Normally you can access the property from a couple different entrances but today they funneled traffic into a singular entrance.
They apparently opened just a little ahead of noon because there are already people here on the gaming floor.
They created an area outside the entrance for lines to form with markers on the floor to remind people to social distance. It wasn't long. There were maybe a few people in line. People are let in right away.
I was scanned with a temperature device much like the one they had at Pala and reminded to keep my face mask on at all times. I was told that if I have to smoke or take a drink, I could pull my mask down to do that.
I saw one guy smoking a cigarette with his mask pulled down while playing at a slot machine.
I should note that I am not taking any pictures from inside of the casinos because they normally have very strict policies about photography. So unfortunately you will have to rely on my descriptions only for now.
As is the case with Pala, about half the machines are turned off in places where the machines are close together. Chairs have been removed at the machines that are off.
TV screens hanging over the gaming floor at Harrah's are frequently flashing messages reminding folks that the casino will check their temperature before they enter, require them to wear masks and keep a six foot distance from other patrons.
The TVs also share messages reminding people to wash their hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds. The messages also say that hand sanitizing stations are available.
That's it for now. Keep an eye out for our story later today.
