2. Lack of regulation is a huge problem, and not just now during covid19, and not just for service workers: "In lieu of issuing any national standards to protect workers from the virus, the federal government has instead asked companies to regulate themselves."
I'm reminded of Lau v. Nichols (1974) which said children who did not speak English were not being provided equal educational access (in violation of all sorts of laws and amendments), yet gave no specific remedy to fix the fucking problem and left it up to the individual states.
When you leave remedies to the states, like in Lau v. Nichols, it's a severe miscarriage of justice bc it's then left in the hands of bigots who believe that stripping children of language(s) other than English is patriotic.
Or in the case of covid19 and protection of workers, if you leave it in the hands of companies like Amazon & Walmart: "I think experience shows that they cannot be trusted to prioritize the safety of their workers and even the safety of their customers over their own profits.”
